Born of the first oil crisis -- the 1957 Suez Crisis -- the Mini debuted in 1959. Designed for four adults and to be affordable, Minis became a cultural phenomenon. With laterally widely spaced wheels, Minis were even used for road rallies. In 1961 racing legend John Cooper installed a more powerful engine, stronger brakes, and other components to create the Mini Cooper 997. Minis won the Monte Carlo three times in the mid-1960s.
Minis were eventually offered as stationwagons and pickups. In 1999 over 100 automobile journalists declared the Mini “European Car of the Century”, only the Ford Model T beating it as the top global car. Then the new Mini debuted at the Paris Auto Show, and entered the US market in 2002.
The Mini Countryman is packed with an alloy 181 hp 1.6L 16-valve turbocharged engine, and a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. A four-wheel drive version is also offered.
Mini Countryman ™ metallicCountryman is factory assembled and securely packed in a form-fitted tray held inside a clear plastic carton with opening end flaps. A red Herpa label decorates the packaging.
The model is skillfully molded and assembled without any blemishes or flaws. Doors, hoods and panels lines are defined with fine recessed lines; the grille intentions are much deeper. The door handles are slightly raised. The model features applied side view mirrors.
Soft tires with tread detail are pressed upon hubs to support the model. Mini’s chassis has basic molded detailed.
The windshield and other glazing are free of distortion and scratches. Individual clear lenses simulate the headlights and red tinted clear lenses are used for the brake lights. Dual chromed exhaust pipes with drilled out ends extend from under the rear bumper .
Two side view mirrors are attached to the sides, and a rearview mirror is in the cockpit. The interior can be seen through the small windows and features bucket seats, steering wheel, console, stick shift and nice dashboard detail.
The automobile is trimmed with black chrome around the windows. The black grille also sports chrome edge detailing. Wipers are molded into the windshield chrome. The model features separately applied side view mirrors.
FinishSmooth glossy paint covers the exterior. This edition is silber / silver with Schwartz / black on the top of the passenger compartment. Herpa also offers a Mini Cooper in chili rot / chili red.
Herpa did not overlook the Mini Cooper emblem on the hood and rear. Cooper S is scripted across the lower right of the rear hatch. Identifying this Countryman as the four-wheel drive model, All 4 adorns the flanks of the front doors. All of these markings are printed – Herpa does not use decals!
ConclusionHerpa has created an impressive Mini Countryman. It features excellent detail and molding, a beautiful finish, clear lenses for lights, a detailed cockpit, and outstanding printing. The only ‘low’ is the token underchassis. Overall, this is a superb HO scale modern car for your layout, diorama, or collection. Certainly recommended.
